Also known chemically as 4-hydroxyphenylalanine, tyrosine is an organic amino acid, and is not only produced in the human body but can also be found in the compositions of many different foods. Various forms of poultry, fish, nuts, and dairy products all contain this amino acid. It enhances the effectiveness of nerve transmissions throughout the central nervous system, which promotes a higher sense of ambition, focus, and sexual arousal.



With its high bio availability, tyrosine quickly crosses the blood brain barrier to spread through the central nervous system. Afterwards, it acts as a precursor to many crucial neurotransmitters, which are utilized by the brain to enable communication between neurons by electrical synapses. These neurotransmitters (such as dopamine and epinephrine) are metabolized at rapid rates and swell in numbers, promoting the enhancement of a number of functions within the mind. Attention is sharpened, alertness is focused, and the libido is heightened as a result. Stress levels are also reduced. According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive database, Tyrosine has been shown to be beneficial in the fight against Phenylketonuria (a condition that prevents the metabolization of phenylalanine). It is also involved in the health and processes that some organs take to create and maintain hormones for the body. These organs, the adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid glands, are responsible for the aforementioned function. Tyrosine is also directly involved in molding the composition of proteins throughout the body.

Side Effects & Dosages

Despite Tyrosine’s generally accepted safe status as a supplement, it is important to note that it does not come without side effects. These can include but are not limited to: migraines and intestinal/stomach issues. These side effects mainly come about after Tyrosine has been abused however, so a diligent understanding and practice of its consumption is advised. Note that those with either Hyperthyroidism or Graves’ Disease should not take Tyrosine. Also, due to concerns that relate to unstable increases in blood pressure (which can threaten the user with strokes and/or heart attacks), anyone taking MAOI’s should also refrain from Tyrosine. Supplementation alongside L-Dopa and artificial thyroid hormones is also discouraged. General dosages range in-between 1 to 5 grams daily, but clinical reports have shown that Tyrosine can be taken in portions of up to 12 grams (which would come via the recommendation of a qualified physician).
