Pterostilbene (found in foods such as blueberries and grapes and acting as a natural infection-fighter) is a plant-based phytoalexin. It limits the effectiveness of inflammatory mediators, reducing inflammation in the body and helping prevent many inflammation-related disorders. This herbal compound plays a role in cell health by regulating genes which cause programmed cell death (apoptosis) and cancer cell proliferation.

The effects of Pterostilbene occur on a molecular level by up-regulating genes which cause or stimulate the programmed cell death known as apoptosis while at the same time down-regulating those genes that allow cancer (and other) cells to invade and grow.

Pterostilbene can also increase the activity of potent fat-sensing compounds that lower blood lipids and sugar levels. It also maintainslower markers of dangerous glucose-damaged proteins in the liver.

Pterostilbene is also able to dramatically reduce the production of inflammation and inflammatory mediators which are usually linked to age-related conditions (like atherosclerosis, chronic inflammatory diseases, and even cognitive decline). It is also thought to work by up-regulating specific brain proteins which are associated with improved memory.

According to a 2012 study published in Neurobiology of Aging, the authors suggested that the ability of this supplement to reduce inflammation may be one of the key factors in terms of preserving cognitive function. Additionally, it is thought that Pterostilbene is effective at preventing the loss of Dopamine from memory centers.

Side Effects & Dosages

Information regarding side effects relating to Pterostilbene are currently difficult to find, primarily because there are not any known recorded side effects caused by Pterostilbene at this time. It is still important to only start with a low dose and work up from there, but it is incredibly safe and there is a low risk of any negative outcomes.

The optimal dosage range for Pterostilbene is generally considered to be in between 50 and 250 mg per day. The best way to take this supplement is in two divided doses, morning and then mid to late afternoon.
