Ampakines are compounds that activate chemicals who directly modulate the amino acid system in the brain. This system, called the excitatory system, stimulates receptors (known as AMPA receptors) that promote an increase in mental alertness, memory capacity, and brain health.

The source of these benefits can be found within the stimulation of the excitatory system. The interaction between the ampakines and the receptors there is a form of synaptic communication, which assists in the growth of neurons and the healthy processing of long term memory within the brain.

That chemical reaction incites an increase of mental focus, and can also be of therapeutic significance to those diagnosed with hyperactivity disorders like ADHD. It’s even hoped that ampakines will lead in the prevention and eventual treatment of diseases like Alzheimer’s. Ampakines are the most powerful nootropic supplements, and they also come with the benefit of lacking many common side effects known to other traditional stimulants. The two most popular ampakines are Sunifiram and Unifiram.

Side effects

Ampakines do not force AMPA receptors to act faster within the brain. They simply encourage them to adjust while providing their stimulant-like benefits, making suggestions for the brain to only allow them when needed.

Because of this, many common side effects found in other stimulants are lacking in ampakines. However, their roles in activating receptors raises concerns regarding a theoretical phenomenon called excitotoxicity.

When too many receptors are activated and more chemicals are produced to impact the brain’s mental abilities, excess activity can result. The neurons within can work too quickly and burn themselves out, which can cause cell death within the brain. Of course, this phenomenon is only speculated to exist, but further research continues.

CX Classes

The CX class is a group of ampakines being developed by the Cortex Pharmaceuticals Company in Irvine, CA, and are being created specifically to treat Alzheimer’s disease and ADHD. The following are a few of their results:

Also known as Ampalex, this is one of the first ampakines to be researched and created. Animal tests have shown excellent results, while human trials have not yet been as

This ampakine is supposedly stronger than all prior CX supplements, and is making progress in its benefits for Alzheimer’s and ADHD. It is currently still in development.

Being developed by Eli Lilly and Company, this group of ampakines have been classified as protein stimulators, which is beneficial for brain health. The formation of new neurons can help to strengthen the faculties of long-term memory, and it is hoped that theywill help to treat Schizophrenia.
